The state of AZ likes testing fuel caps but new cars don't seem to come with them anymore, which is a good thing I think. One less thing to fail the test for. And in VWs if they wear out a little the engine line comes on, so isn't that special?

It's as much about keeping foreign materials OUT of the tank as it is keeping fuel IN it. This is my first car, in decades, that hasn't had either a locking door or cap. I don't even have a cap.

Why should we yield our right to choose to the Almighty nanny state? Are we too immature to decide whether we want to have a fuel door which locks? Let your Congress Critter know your feelings regarding this issue.

A locking fuel door will do nothing to prevent gasoline theft. All one needs is a good screwdriver, and you could easily pop open any fuel door, locked or not. The only partial prevention is a locking gas cap, but anyone who really wants your gasoline can poke a hole in your tank and catch the draining fuel from it.

Let the free market determine what is standard. If the consumer wants it, it will be available.

I have a Camry. I keep the key to my car in my pocket to unlock the door and to start it. Opening its fuel door from inside the car is enough for me. I don't want to have to pull out a key to open a gas cap or fuel door. All of these mandates by the government for "standard equipment" simply add a lot more to the cost of a vehicle than it would if the free market dictated what is standard equipment, because competition for your business will make it standard and cheaper.

If you really want a locking gas cap, you can buy them from any auto parts store for less than $10.

My Honda Civic has a locking door. However, when buying gas in NJ(full-serve only), one has to "play games" to trick the gas door into opening for the attendant since I am still sitting in the driver's seat and not leaving the car.

I say no as locking fuel doors can be a hindrance in some areas at certain times of the year. If a person wants a locking gas cap then go buy one at your auto parts store or walmart, no need for this to be standard on all vehicles.

Locking fuel doors would be a smart option, but government should have no mandate in this regard. This is between a car manufacturer and the buying public.

Nice idea but I voted "no" as I don't see the need to add it to the overall cost of a vehicle. Car thieves will either drive til the tank's empty and abandon the car, or break open the tank.

Why would anyone put "Yes" to this? Surely, you are aware that car mfgrs. are in the business of making money and they'll charge you more than you can buy one for at the local Auto Zone....RIGHT? Can't you just buy one yourself?
