Diesel Price Chart (c) GasBuddyFor diesel consumers, it's about time. Diesel price declines are finally outpacing gasoline as gasoline prices near their bottom and diesel plays a game of catch up.

According to GasBuddy data, diesel prices in the last week have dropped to $3.033/gal, from $3.121/gal a week ago, for a drop of 8.8c/gal. Meanwhile gasoline prices have fallen from $2.210/gal a week ago to $2.160/gal today, a five cent a gallon drop.

Update: GasBuddy expects diesel prices nationally to drop to the $2.50-$2.75/gal region, with most states seeing at least another 25-35c decline over the next 2-3 weeks.

22 states have seen diesel prices drop by double digits in the last week (over 10c/gal) while only 11 states have seen gasoline prices decline by double digits. Clearly, there's some catching up here by diesel prices....

So far diesel prices have held steady while gas prices are rocketing up.

If you shop around, you can get Diesel fuel for the same price as regular unleaded around here.

It was very cheap years ago, but Diesel fuel then is not Diesel fuel now. Four little letters are the difference: "ULSD."

"Big Oil" can justify the increase in pump price, but if they tried to you wouldn't believe them anyway.

As it should! As I understand it, diesel is a byproduct of gasoline production and it used to be very cheap years ago. Then manufacture of diesel engines began increasing at a rapid rate so big oil just zoomed the pump price up without any cost-of-production justification or any other legitimate reason.

diesel doesn't require as much refining as gasoline, so there should be no reason for it to be so excessively expensive... except truckers can't change their engines.

Diesel is a by-product of gasoline. Little refining and unless it's used as heating oil very little other use for it without more refining

She was a good $0.35/L difference about a month ago (Diesel being more)

......

Jump ahead to today here in Central Alberta, Canada

......

$0.27/L from the average gas price to the lowest diesel price

The premium here for diesel is at least $.50/gal or 20% at the lower priced stations and is up to $1.00/gal in some areas. Painful at best. Enjoy what you drive.

tom: if you'd listen to some folks on here, they will tell ya that you flunked Refinery 101 and that diesel isn't one of the first in the refining process.

Diesel should be the same price as gas. Even lower as it is refined less I think ?

silvius: some areas have started to slowly slide. Down here, it is almost a dollar cheaper than it has been for much of the past year. An avg. of 3.89 is now more like $3.15. Some stations have dropped as low as 2.75. Just not near me.

Please tell me where this is happening!!!! The Diesel prices here in Central VA are flat, with next to no movement. I see them down $0.05 one day and up $0.10 the next.

We all pay when diesel prices are high, as most goods end up on some vehicle running diesel fuel at some point.

Diesel Truck Drivers Lose Out In Oil Price Crash Windfall

"It would certainly seem that one factor could simply be that refiners and marketers have not been passing on lower wholesale diesel prices to retail motorists as fast as they might otherwise have. We have no way of knowing how that might factor into the equation."

bobski: that'd be pre-Aug 2008 prices for diesel. Doubt it'll go that low.

Around here gas is still well above 2.20 for average prices.
